Summary
Eamund is the name she is given, and it is the only thing she knows when she wakes up to the smell of smoke. The name sounds both unfamiliar on her tongue and yet inherently her own. Her heart accepts this name as a gift from the Valar, though her mind fights it. The Valar? Her eyes scrunch further closed. Why would she think of anything as a gift from the Valar?
Saved from the smoking village she deduces must be her home, she is taken to Meduseld where she is given the task of caring for Rohan's most prized possession: its young prince, recently orphaned from his mother. As she grows to love him, she must learn to protect him in any way that she can. One attack on the prince can be a thoughtless attempt, but two is a plot. Who wants Théodred dead? Why is Prince Théoden, his father, seeking her out so often? And why is everything both familiar and not?

In 1978, a deal is made between two families as our main characters, Winifred "Fred" Rosier and Regulus Arcturus Black, sit in a hallway, waiting for the papers behind a door to be signed. Fred doesn't know what the future holds, but she feels she might be getting away from a fate worse than death.
Unbeknownst to her, Regulus already has a Dark Mark on his arm and has bigger things to worry about.
