It means Ogata can be completely alone for once, his jacket off and folded up beside him with his cap, a cigarette in his mouth as he looks up at the stars.

In a sense, it's a way to pass the time in this place. But it's more than that, Pucci helps Kars with his experiments because he truly believes that if anyone can find a way to escape, it will be Kars.
