Guilt.
There was no better way to describe it.
The guilt of having taken away the chance of a normal life from his favorite people in the world.
The guilt of forcing them to grow up long before it was due.
The guilt of throwing them in a field of lions when they were mere children and having them deal with it.
The guilt of having done all this for his own, selfish reasons.
He couldn’t handle it. He felt a huge stone sitting at the base of his stomach, pressing in on his windpipe. It was getting harder to breathe, and he couldn’t lie down any longer. He sat up fast and reached for the window for some fresh air. The cold night air filled the room and he took in a deep breath, but it wasn’t enough for his lungs. No matter how much air he took in, his lungs screamed for more.
He needed to do something. Get moving, get out.

Being overcome by guilt over a question during an interview, Hongjoong seeks comfort in his best friend.

What was it that Wooyoung said? Let him break your heart, and don't let him mend it. One would think the heartbreak would be the most difficult part of it, but the desperation with which Seonghwa’s lips breathe out Hongjoong’s name makes it seem as if he’s begging to let him cradle the shattered pieces in his hands, down on his knees with careful fingers smoothing out the cracks yet another time, before placing it back into the deep hollow he has so meticulously carved into Hongjoong’s chest over time, unaware. Selfish.
“Can you please look at me, at least?”
Hongjoong always thought he’d be able to resist it, he’d be able to step out and never look back, never turn around. He loves Seonghwa too much to turn around. He’d always figured he was brave enough not to. Although back then, he thought Seonghwa would be following him to safety.
Now, he can’t hear Seonghwa’s footsteps following him, and his voice is getting further away each second. The thought of Seonghwa not being there to greet him when he turns around is terrifying enough to have him slip.
