It began with you declining dinner invitations and outings with Zayne, offering up all sorts of poorly pieced together excuses. Tara needed your help getting ready for a date she had later that afternoon. Jenna needed you to stay behind and finish the backlog of paperwork. You’d gone as far as saying that an OTTO needed your help, looking for any excuse. At your most desperate you’d conjured up a stammered excuse that included and revolved around Xavier. You had no words then or now for the shame and tremendous guilt that had simmered in your stomach and wound its way tightly around your throat, like thorns sticking to clothing.
You saw the furrow in Zayne’s brow. You heard the hesitation in his voice. The disappointment that laced his tone on the phone, the difference in the text messages he’d send you.
You knew that you’d dug yourself into this hole, yet you couldn’t even glance at the shovel that would help you carve your way out.

No matter how hard you begged your mind to return to itself, it felt as if you were existing in your body through another person's eyes. It’d felt as if you’d stared into the sun for a moment too long, and were left with a bright and unfocusing circle burnt through your vision.
Demons, angels, humans. It didn’t matter. You were always consistently missing the mark, somehow always messing up.
You had to focus. Come back to yourself. You had to get over this burning fury and devastatingly empty void that stretched from the deepest part of your chest to the back of your throat.
You’d been in the devildom for a few months, yet your entire world had been flipped upside down several times over.
Less than half a week ago you had been killed. Three days ago. Not only that but it had been done twice.

In Endeavor's apology to Natsuo and Fuyumi, he failed to mention his prized possession. He failed to even address Shouto. His youngest son. The successor to the Number One spot. The child he’d carefully nurtured and burned since birth, the one he’d coaxed compliance from. Endeavor never allowed Shouto the slightest space for defiance.
His heir.
Wasn’t he of any importance? He glared at the hand that Enji laid on Natsuo’s ungrateful, recoiling shoulder. Remembering all the times he would’ve begged for even a scrap of affection from their father. All the times he would’ve begged for an apology. If he’d been a year or two younger he would’ve completely broken at the smallest apology from him. At the smallest drop of love from him.

Summary
With the knowledge that he was only going to make himself feel a thousand times worse, he picked up the phone and unlocked it.
“We haven’t talked in a while recently. I know you don’t want to talk to me, but I’m trying to change, Shouto. No matter what you think or do, I’ll always be here and trying to get better for you. I’ll always be your father. Fuyumi misses you. Call me.”
His breath hitched as he stared blankly at the screen, remembering to breathe around his sniffles after ten seconds or so.
A fresh wave of pressure appeared behind his eyes as he pushed himself up, drawing in one final deep breath in a final attempt to calm himself.
He hastily brought his phone above his head, throwing it down onto the stone with enough strength to shatter the screen and splinter the phone case. His intelligible cry loudly accompanied the noise.

Summary
You sniffle pitifully. You haven't breathed through your nose in days, no matter how many times you blow your nose. The excess mucus running down the back of your throat is no help either. Not to mention the headaches that press hard against your brain and the back of your eyes, or the exhaustion weighing you down all the time.

They continue their walk through the garden, Lucifer “oo”-ing and “ah”-ing at the different Devildom flora. They come across one of Satan’s stray cats that Lucifer pretends not to know about and he laughs, bright and tinkling. It sounds like wind chimes. Mammon watches his face split open into a smile so bright it hurts to look at before fading into something softer but no less radiant. He doesn’t think he’s seen him this full of joy or wonder ever. He wonders when the last time Lucifer was unburdened was. -

Slipping his hand beneath your back, he pushes upwards gently, guiding you to sit up. He slips his sweater over your head and holds the sleeves while you worm your arms into them, and you obey almost mindlessly, your eyes focused on a spot in the distance.
But when he tries to guide you out of bed, you show resistance, stubbornly shaking your head no with teary eyes. He hesitates for a moment, then sighs, climbing onto your bed and sitting down beside you. He opens his arms, a wordless invitation, and you take it, leaning against his chest and hiding your face in his shirt.
"Take your time." He murmurs, pressing a kiss to your hair. "I'm not going anywhere."
