    This was absurd.

    She had been placed — maneuvered — into this situation. Separated from Lady Catherine, from the sphere in which her attentions might be properly directed and, more importantly, properly observed. Installed instead in a light, exposed carriage with a younger son whose fortune was uncertain and whose prospects, while respectable, were by no means assured.

    It was, she thought, a test.

    Very well.

    If she could not avoid it, she would endure it — and on her own terms. She suddenly felt very cross, and became determined to make Colonel Fitzwilliam feel very cross as well.
