“Care to dance?” I jested feebly as he steadied me. “We already do,” he responded, almost seriously. “It certainly seems that way,” I replied, matching my tone to his and swaying in his arms.

"...To demand transformation. Obedience. Respect. You understand that impulse some, I think."

I looked aside. "I don't know about that. I heard how you and Chade were bickering over me earlier. I'm a serving man to you both, a tool. What could I possibly know about commanding anyone or anything?"

The knife stilled in the air. "Would you like to learn?" the Fool asked softly.

"Learn what?" I returned, just as quietly. My stomach hurt. My groin did, too.

"What it is like," the Fool whispered, setting the knife aside and staring across the table at me avidly, "To be obeyed without question. To be the master, not the man-at-arms."

Fitz and Beloved pass a heated and tender night together on the eve of the Prince's quest. Conversation is had, secrets are shared, and even more are guarded jealously.

    Summary

Fitz was patient with me. Gruff, but always agonizingly patient. He bundled me into a blanket and sat me before his hearth, shut the window, and shoved the bloody cloak into a corner where I couldn't see it any longer. Then he sat down behind me and pulled me roughly into his arms. I went, angry at myself for going so easily. For always caving so immediately to him, this man who gave so much to me, while always holding so much back.

It didn't matter. His arms were the only thing that chased the chill away, so slowly, I let him warm me. We sat without speaking, my back pressed to his chest, his chin hooked over my shoulder, my smooth cheek pressed against his ever-so-faintly whiskered one. It was a peace entirely unendurable. Silently, we both endured it.

Amidst the trappings of a foreign celebration, in a land that is not his own, a White Prophet learns to live again, and his Catalyst offer shelter from the cold.

We play this game on occasion, my grizzled guard dog and I. Usually when one of us needs centering. Sometimes it is for him, other times not. Today, he came to me wordlessly, knelt at my feet, and set his head docilely in my lap, and I knew at once what he wanted, what he must need. As well to place a collar and lead in my hands, for how unsubtly he was behaving.

    Summary

In this Medieval Knight AU, Sir Thomas FitzChivalry returns to Buckkeep after the Red Ship Wars, eventually entering into a secret situationship with Queen Regent Kettricken. A decade later, Fitz decides to break free of this cycle at the start of tournament season, determined to change his fate and fall in love by following the steps laid out by minstrels. He hears rumors of a gorgeous French visitor and eagerly meets them, only to discover Lord Golden is not, in fact, a Lady.

“Perhaps I need to try again. Go about it the proper way. All the tales the minstrels sing say that this is the path to much love and many children. To a happily ever after. And those who go about it the wrong way often end up in a tragedy.” I could not help but notice the distinctly tragic path of my life.

I spun the leaf once more in my fingers, felt the satisfying irregularity in its stem. It seemed advice I might give my squire rather than a man. A child’s path, a fairy tale. An act of desperation. And yet…

“It cannot be worse than this.” I tucked the leaf carefully into my shirt before I stood. “I thank you for your wisdom.”
