    Summary

The man on the smudged laptop screen, captured in the pixelated glory of Mo Ran’s dashcam footage, stares wide-eyed and vulnerable into the camera as death comes careening towards him. His expression is unguarded, wet hair plastered to pale cheeks, mouth softened as if on the precipice of a gasp, while the livid gleam of the stop light scatters violently red off the slick asphalt, and paints the stranger in a rosy faience.

    He’s beautiful.

Mo Ran hasn’t been blessed with the most extensive of vocabularies, and can’t give voice to the purple prose a more talented tongue might offer, but he knows beautiful when he sees it. He’s been staring with unrepentant fascination at this same freeze-frame image for over an hour now, captivated, his cramped bedroom illuminated only by the battered laptop’s fifteen-inch display.

    Summary

Chu Wanning remembers only five winters, long and drawn-out into one endless night. Without a star in sight, not a single glimmer of hope to guide him, he’d trudged along snow-swept roads heading nowhere in particular. Following that faithful spring encounter, his body had felt much colder than before, too cold to bear the touch of another.

Life had become truly unbearable after Mo Ran. It was almost funny how long Chu Wanning had spent musing on the makings of hell only to find out that he hadn’t come even close to experiencing it. How could he claim to have felt the throes of death without having ever lived in the first place? Because that’s what Mo Ran had been to Chu Wanning; his first lick of air, life a taste sweeter than every other on the tip of his tongue.

Chu Wanning lives and dies on the heels of winter-dread. Mo Ran burns alive.
