Not loss like when daddy made me set my pet garden snail, Lettuce, free. Not loss like when I’d got the final answer wrong in the state school quiz and sent our team home. Not even loss like when mummy said that grandfather wasn’t going to come back.
Because I’d had Annie through everything up until then, and nothing could truly feel like a loss with her.
When I hit eleven, I was struck with the greatest loss of my entire life, and I attempted to navigate the pain, desperate to have my Annie help me through the storm
Only this time there was no Annie to turn to; Annie was my loss.
