Summary
John had appeared a few more times in person, just two or three times for dinner, even more often in Peter’s stories - even once he’d dropped from surgery and was technically no longer her brother's mentee. Still, Jackie was relatively surprised when Peter arrived with a bandaged John in tow. Peter had swept into the home, as though it was routine for him to appear and leave bruised doctors standing in their entryway. He’d continued to busy himself, leaving John to stand there, awkwardly hunched, like his body weight was unfamiliar and causing him to sag.

A short selection of caretaking that happens after "blood ties" concludes. It's not necessary to read that first, but helpful.

Summary
Mark has never much believed in the phrase, “It’s so hot you could fry an egg on the sidewalk.” However, June in Chicago this year may finally prove the adage right. He’s willing to bet Jerry would test the theory if he leant into the childlike curiosity. A steady stream of sweat drips down his forehead, despite the surgical hat and headband he’s been wearing non-stop since the heatwave began.
“Randi,” He starts, heading to the board to update some patients that are being seen. “Can you adjust the…” His next words are swallowed by a sudden hiss, pop, and gurgle. As Mark gestures towards the vent, it gives one final heave of cool air. Then, there’s silence.
Randi blots at her face with a handful of tissues. She raises one eyebrow and dryly responds to his aborted suggestion. “I don’t think I can do anything to the AC, Dr. Greene.”
----------A submission for the "more cake" challenge over on the ER discord. (AKA there's a heatwave and everyone is suffering. some more than others. chaos unfolds in the ER. more chaos than normal)

Summary
“Y’never,” Frank starts, jolting her from her musing. He pauses speaking, stopping only to focus all of his energy into opening his eyes. They feel like they’re loaded with sandbags. He manages little slivers, so Dana can only see the barest hints of bright blue.
She makes an inquisitive noise, a tiny “Hmm?” as she busies herself by fixing the hospital issue bedding, picking at imaginary lint.
Frank smacks his lips, once, twice, like he’s just remembering they’re valuable elements in defining word shape. “Y’never,” he repeats, the words hoarse. “Never call m’kiddo.”
It’s so very Frank that it sparks a laugh from Dana. The short burst of laughter bubbles in her throat, in the same manner that tears sometimes pull unexpectedly. She blinks them back, banishing them, and instead focuses on the figure in bed in front of her. “You’re normally not in a hospital bed.” Dana counters, her voice tight with emotion.

Summary
Bobby had been eight when he’d first been diagnosed as sick. He’d never heard an official diagnosis, not really, only the flimsy excuse of leukemia that his parents had fed the board members as a salve. A dying kid was better than a mentally ill one.
Johnny, at five years old, had been his shadow, his own little mini-me. He’d spent hours curled on the hospital bed, squeezing his tiny body next to Bobby's, his little hands patting the blankets and saying “the doctors’ll fix you.”
Even then, Johnny had been an optimist.
Bobby could never relate.

Summary
It’s relatively simple for John to diagnose himself. Even if he hadn’t studied for years to practice medicine, the ailment is achingly familiar. An ear infection. And, judging by the lack of sound and his weeble-wobble walking, it’s a double inner ear infection. Fantastic.
As a child, he’d been relatively healthy. He’d stuck mostly to scraped knees or bloody noses, leaving most of the caretaking from his parents, his nannies and other staff, to fall upon his brother. However, John had a particular knack for developing ear infections. His doctors had prescribed antibiotics, ear drops, warm compresses, and other things that John could no longer name but were likely described to his parents as Hail Marys. Finally, he had surgery for ear tubes - not once, but twice.
------
John falls ill. He babysits. He learns. He gets cared for.------
Ambiguously set within the fifth and sixth season of ER, although I've messed up with Reeses age for plot purposes.

Summary
Tim doesn’t know how long he lies there, teachers yelling and classmates whining, before there’s gentle hands on him, easing him up. He leans into the comfort instinctively, recognizing his brother’s touch before he even sees Jason there. He can’t help but wonder if Jason had hopped the fence, or if a teacher had let him through.
It doesn’t matter though because Jason is here, whispering reassurances as he gingerly helps him into a sitting position. “I’ve got you, Timmy, ‘m here. I’ll help you, alright? You’re doing so well.”
Tim doesn’t feel like he’s doing well, but he leans into the gentle touch regardless. He whimpers, knowing he’s doing nothing to prove himself courageous or strong, but it’s hard to care when it hurts so badly.
“Jason Todd-Wayne!” Tim’s teacher snaps, finally approaching them. She looms, not even squatting down to inspect his injuries. “Get back to your play yard this instant!” Tim can’t help but sob in response, white-knuckling his sweatshirt, as if that’ll do anything to keep Jason from letting him go.
“My little brother is hurt!” Jason exclaims. “You have to help him.”

When Tim is getting bullied at school, Jason comes to his defense.

Summary
Shane stares up at the ceiling for a second, blinking slowly, the dim lamp blurring his vision at the edges.
“This is so embarrassing,” he says again, quieter now, like the words are losing some of their meaning.
“It’s not,” Ilya replies.
“It is,” Shane insists, though there’s no real energy behind it anymore. “I came up here to find a bathroom and instead I ” he gestures vaguely, not even opening his eyes. “All of this.
“You drank too much,” Ilya says. “It happens.”
“Not to me,” Shane mumbles. “I don’t do this, I don't kiss strangers, I never have more than one drink. I hate not being in control”
There’s a slight shift beside him, the mattress dipping as Ilya leans back a little, closer now.
“First time for everything.”Shane huffs softly. “I don’t think this is a good first time.”
