“This should be you down there,” his father whispers softly against Mike’s ear, a comforting and familiar sound. It muffles the buzzing in his head, like a blanket made of silk. His hand rests on Michael’s shoulder, slender, pale fingers a striking contrast compared to the black of Mike’s suit. “Not her. Right?”
Mike sighs, resigned. “Right. Sorry, Dad.”
“That’s alright.”
First, there were four. Then there were three. And now there's just two.
Elizabeth's death puts Mike in quite a predicament — it's just him and his father, and while initially thrilling, the sole thought starts to slowly fill him with dread once the missing children's posters start to turn up in Hurricane.

1983.

He has only been given two instructions: "Find her," and "put her back together."
His father has promised that if he does this one thing, Mike and Evan will be free of him and the Afton name. But Michael quickly realizes that nothing is what it seems -- a situation that is further complicated when Jeremy Fitzgerald, the boy Michael never allowed himself to love, comes back into his life. Suddenly, he has people to protect, and a future worth chasing.
But his father's legacy casts a long shadow, and Michael soon discovers that in order to secure that future, he will need to stop trying to run from the past.

Summary

It isn't long before the two find themselves rebuilding their lost friendship and working together at the rental service. However, this job takes them much further than they ever thought. Terrible things have happened, things they can hardly bear to believe. Soon, both their sanity and relationship are tested throughout numerous life-threatening situations, all the while one question burns in their minds. Is it truly worth it to risk their own lives in order to make the past right?
