Summary
When the Interrogator asked if he had anything to say on his own behalf, Draco shook his head, his lips pressed tight in a thin line. There was nothing to say that wouldn’t sound like an excuse.

Summary
Laurence and young Bertram had evidently been practicing fencing, if the two wooden rapiers lying in the grass were anything to go by, but at some point Laurence had gotten a hold on the boy and was now twirling the child in circles, flung over his shoulder like a sack of grain, as they both laughed bright as the sun. With their golden hair and elegant features, they could have been father and son, and Tharkay had a sudden, horrifying realization that he had miscalculated.
Tharkay, upon discovering that Laurence loves children, realizes he might want some of his own someday. He proceeds to severely overreact to this revelation.

Summary
It is the captain he cannot stand, Captain William Laurence, with all the pride and false honour of his countrymen and none of the good sense to stay in dreary England and leave the rest of the world to those who don't want to destroy it.

Summary
It would be easy, comfortable, to sit down before the settee, stretch his legs towards the heat of the fire, curl an arm around the slim muscle of Tharkay’s calf and his fingers around the fine bones of Tharkay’s ankle, above the ropey line of scars where shackles left their mark in the Blue Mountain. He might lay his head against Tharkay’s knee from that position, as he listens to Granby speaking.
The thought is at least not as craven as the desires that usually hook into Laurence’s gut when he joins Tharkay late in the drawing room; when they are alone.
