There’s a sharp intake of breath from him before he mutters something to himself, his eyes fluttering shut for a moment as his lips twist downwards into a heavy frown. Astarion forces his lips back into a practiced smile, his eyes filled with longing and something else. “I should have expected something like this.” His voice lightens somewhat, taking on a cheery quality to it. “Well! That’s just a minor setback, Darling. No worries, we can work through this together.”

Stop all this hurting, he said, Come back to me now. You’re not tempted by his promises of love and care. Rather, you know full-well how joyfully he’ll fulfill his threats. The longer you stay away, the more he will take from the city and its people that you saved. The more torture he will inflict just from the frustration of your absence. But, if you can play his games, if you can dance upon his puppet strings, perhaps you can distract him long enough for your friends to act.
