Eve hadn’t slept for twenty-eight hours, and time took on a sticky quality, drifting by before rushing over several hours in an instant. She knew, somewhere, people were celebrating for the liberation of France. She wondered if Niko was there, enjoying himself, while she struggled to make soldiers and civilians comfortable in a cold tent.
She hoped he was, hoped he wasn’t somewhere like this. A four-hundred bed field hospital set up in the grounds of some French aristocrats house, with grass floors that had already been disturbed by the heavy steps of stretcher-bearers.

there was something almost poetic about the way it disappeared. it sated itself with the mere act of existing. enid would admire it, perhaps even envy it, if existing was something she desired.
instead, enid admired those swans she had once read about, the ones that soared high and let themselves fall without flying. she doubted that story was true, but the idea sounded nice.
enid wants to die.
it’s not some grand admission. it’s just the truth. a three-week spring break trip with wednesday to new jersey lets her think about the present, the past, and maybe even the future.

Enid was afraid, and exhausted, and grieving, and beneath all of it, she was oriented toward Wednesday with a constancy that defied every rational explanation Wednesday had ever constructed to contain what existed between them.
I hope she's safe, the feeling said, in the wordless vocabulary of a mind that was struggling to form coherent sentences. I hope she doesn't come looking for me. I hope she does.
