It isn't long before Lieutenant Montgomery Adamson knocks on the door of Robby's clinic. The gleam of his uniform is intimidating, helped along by the sword belted to his hip. Robby shows him into the front room, already shaking his head.
"How many times do I have to decline, sir?" Robby walks directly to the liquor cabinet. It's two in the afternoon, and he has a patient waiting to be seen. To hell with it; Mr. Harris complains once a week with persistent external piles. He can wait. Robby pulls a bottle of bourbon from the top shelf and, after a beat of hesitation, a singular glass.
Adamson ignores his question. "A short stint. One, two years tops. We need proper physicians out there, Robby. Ones we can trust. Talented, quick on the spot. We need you."

“Stop looking at me like that,” he whispers. One of his hands comes up to hold Jack’s to his face.
“Like what?” Jack replies, and the way the corner of his mouth twitches tells Robby that Jack knows exactly how he looks. Of course he does, the bastard. “Like I love you? Because I do.”
Or, Robby can't get back to sleep after a nightmare, but at least Jack is right there with him. He always is.

Jack pushed himself up at last, wobbling slightly as the socket pinched. Robby’s hand was there without thought, steadying his elbow. Unobtrusive, no words or pinched brow in worry. The warmth of it lingered long after Jack shuffled toward the living room.
The record player was still spinning when Jack sank onto the couch. Some old jazz number, trumpet low and sweet. He let himself sink into the cushions, prosthetic awkward against the coffee table. He considered taking it off, but that would mean dealing with the ache of absence, the half-leg that still screamed. Sometimes it was easier to pretend it was all still there.

Oh my god, I didn't know there were any copies of this left on the internet. For those who don't know, this is like. This is a foundational text of hockey RPF. This is from before hockey RPF was really a thing even. It's from the mid-aughts and wasn't posted to a fanfiction website. Instead, OP dropped this insane RPF manifesto onto a normal ass hockey fan forum (which no longer exists) then deleted their account like two days later. Just handed this to a bunch of jocks and hockey bros and dipped. Legendary shit. Like, I don't think this kid even knew what fanfiction was, the fucking hand of god just compelled him to write about being an MLH player's sex slave and show it to the world. I pray every day that this insane child actually made it to the MLH and got to meet Scott Hunter.
So maybe Shane had a little crush on Scott Hunter in his younger years. So maybe he anonymously posted online about it once. So maybe it had become an internet legend and a running joke in the MLH.

Robby blinked, slamming back into his body, aware of his elevated heart rate, the sweat prickling along his lower back and at the backs of his knees, making his dress slacks clammy. "Nope," he said, because he didn't. He didn't.
