Summary
Eddie’s terrified. The weight lodged in his chest has shifted to complete and utter panic. His skin is hot. His eyes are burning. There was once a time when he’d say, I do not panic, but even that was a lie. Eddie panics a lot, actually. But he’s been taught how to manage it, how to make himself Jello, how to bring himself back to reality.
But this reality is what’s panic-inducing, and he can’t Jello himself out of this one.
Because he’s not scared for himself. Eddie’s killed men before. More than four at a time. Eddie’s, objectively, been in worse situations than this. Eddie’s been shot and stabbed and buried.
But he’s never been in a situation like this, with a four-year-old who means the world to him, a four-year-old who’s Buck’s son.

Or - Eddie takes Theo to the mall. The trip does NOT go as planned, when robbers infiltrate and they’re forced into a hostage situation.

Eddie frowns. He glances at Buck, as if Buck has any idea what Tommy is talking about. “What’s not?”
“I like to think I’m uniquely positioned to say it’s worth it.”
Or, Buck is not in love with his best friend, and Eddie is super straight. For sure. Definitely.

Buck cautiously peers into the small opening, catching a glimpse of Eddie staring at himself in the mirror, fingers gripping the edge of the porcelain sink as he shakes his head and says, “I can’t believe I’m in love with a Buckley.”
It's a miracle Buck doesn’t pass out on the spot.
He takes a stumbling step back into Eddie’s room, somehow managing to close the door quietly in his haze. Although it’s entirely possible that he just slammed it because he can’t hear anything over the whooshing in his ears.
He doesn’t know how he didn’t see it before.
Eddie is in love with Maddie.

Before he was legally allowed to drink, Eddie looked out the passenger side window of his dad’s truck, and in the dusty, barren nothing of the Texan landscape, he saw his entire life written out for him in someone else’s handwriting.
Eleven years later, walking out of an emergency meeting at Christopher’s school over his son’s recent “behaviour”, Eddie thinks of the view out of his dad’s truck.
And when Buck asks, “So? What happened?”
Eddie lies.
