Ilya hesitated, staring at the number. He was captain of Hollander’s new team. It would have been completely normal, if not expected, that he would reach out to him soon. But his hand had turned to lead, his finger hovering over the “Call” button. What would he even say?
“Hey Hollander. Sorry your team dumped you out of nowhere after building them a dynasty and you’re being shipped back to your hometown to play on an historically shitty team, captained by me, the guy who you’ve been pitted against your whole career and built up a decade’s worth of resentment towards, not to mention the fact that we sucked each other’s dicks that one time years ago and then pretended that it never happened. Haha, yeah, good times. Anyways. See you at practice.”

Summary

Basically a very self-indulgent fic about how hard it would be for Ilya to actually move on from the pain of the past and to go no contact with his family in a timeline where Grigori is still alive. Also, Ilya deserves to be known and loved by more people than just Shane and Sveta. Forced/Found Family here we come.

"Well, then we're going to have to add her to the Raiders' WAGs group," Connor pointed out, tapping his phone against the palm of his hand. "Anyway, what's her name?"
Ilya swallowed hard. He wanted so badly to tell the truth.
"Jane," he replied, the lie sliding easily but leaving a bitter taste on his lips.
"Jane. Classic name. Cool," Cliff approved with a nod. "So, is she hot? I know you're all paranoid about privacy and won't show a picture, but, fuck, tell us at least something about the girl!"
The "girl" was gorgeous. The most beautiful person Ilya had ever seen in his entire life. The owner of the best laugh, the warmest and firmest hug, the hands that gave the best head scratches. The man with the most addictive kisses, a breathtakingly sculpted body, expressive brown eyes, and, above all, the most wonderful freckles in the world.
"She has freckles," Ilya murmured, unable to prevent a goofy, lovestruck smile from breaking through his unbothered macho facade.

“—okay, that’s unusual,” the first commentator’s voice is saying over the footage. “Hm. Ladies and gentlemen, it seems that, thanks to some last-minute additions to the broadcast, we’ll be able to get an audio feed straight from the arena today!”
Ilya frowns. Who the fuck was stupid enough to get mic’d for this fucking game? Some idiot rookie from Toronto, probably. They really don’t teach kids how to handle anything these days.
“That’s right!” The second announcer pipes up with an annoyingly fake cheery voice. Ilya immediately wants to send a puck straight into his windpipe. “We just got confirmation that Captain Shane Hollander himself will be wearing a microphone during tonight’s game.”
Ilya sits up and spins to face the TV screen fast enough to give a lesser man whiplash.
Shane doesn’t get injured when Ilya comes back from Russia in 2017, so Ilya follows through on his plan to end things between them. A year later, despite being miserable, he still believes he did the right thing for both of them.
Except the Voyageurs have been acting weird around Hollander lately. And wait, what do you mean he’s mic’d for this game?- Language:
