Shane waits for a long time, actually. Until Ilya’s on the verge of sleep, until it feels like gravity is pulling him into the warm core of Shane’s chest. When he speaks, his voice is shaky and his arms pull heavier around Ilya’s chest.
“I’m glad you don’t remember the dream,” he says. His lips find Ilya’s temple, the corner of his eye, then his cheekbone. He wraps Ilya’s hand up in his own.“You shouldn’t ever—you should never have to remember a thing like that.”

Ilya swears in Russian for a long time and then hangs up on Shane. As Shane, bewildered, lowers his phone from his ear, it vibrates in his hand. Ilya Rozanov: yes. And then, i’ll come. And then, i hate you.
Shane stares at that last one for a long few seconds, thinking about the wild way Ilya had told Shane that he hated him, back after Shane had injured his knee. His tight-mouthed expression; his violently gesturing hands; the careful way he’d later run his fingers over Shane’s bruised, swollen knee. Shane translates the words in his mind, like he’s Rachel Weisz at the end of The Mummy transposing a dead language into a magic spell.
Shane sends back, me too.
