Summary
In September 2005, Robby left PTMC to travel to New Orleans to assist in relief efforts after the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. There he met a young Army doctor named Jack Abbot, who had deployed to Louisiana with the 14th Combat Support Hospital. “Who’s gonna be the last one standing?” Billy asks, wild-eyed enough to make both Ray and Pete rear back a little.
Pete answers. “We’re going home.” His hand twitches in Ray’s direction before schooling itself. Even though Pete doesn’t outright exclude him from that we, none out of them are under any belief that Stebbins is included.
Despite the protestations, it’s an eerie thought, one that slips under their skins. What if there can only be one?
A few days later, Pete has a dream. He hasn’t had one of those in months.

Pete holds on tight and waits for a sign from the universe that it’s right.
He gets it. He wins a poker tournament that the boys throw while all holed up under a tent, and he wins a couple dollars and one of Barkovitch’s joints. He wins it on pure, unadulterated luck, right from the gods into his lap. Then, as if it weren’t obvious, a second sign. Their next assignment, announced the next morning, takes them back to Da Nang. The second the Major announces it, Pete and Ray look right at each other. Our first time. Pete looks forward again, and begins cooking up a celebration for them, in the same place where it began.

“Wanna talk.” It’s not a question. At this, Pete sits up, cracking his neck to the side as he slowly wakes up more.
“The rain,” Pete whispers, and Ray understands why he doesn’t want to leave the room, not when they can hear the downpour tittering above them, bouncing off a metal roof with insistent percussive noise.
“Need to,” is Ray’s low answer. There’s an outhouse with a door that closes. They can be alone for a second and talk. That’s all that matters to him right now. They’ll be rain-drenched no matter what they do, but they could be somewhere without eyes on them. “Come on,” he urges.

“What food’ja pack?”
“What?” Pete knows what he meant, but wants to play.
Carefully and admonished, Ray asks again “What food did you pack?”
“Pocketed my morning can ration,” McVries answers. Knowing that this means even more canned ham and eggs, Ray wrinkles his nose.
“I brought half a cookie.” Ray’s proud of this fact.
Pete brings his shoulder in, bumping against Ray as Pete’s smile stays aimed low. “You spoil me.”
“Rotten, compadre,” Garraty finishes, borrowing one of Pete’s nicknames with a cheeky look. As Pete leads him down a path that’s still overgrown with lush greenery, barely tread, he tries not to burst.

No, Ray did not always know this, and he reacts accordingly, slack-jawed and wide eyed. Is it hot in here, or is that just the bar? What the fuck is he supposed to say to that? Brilliant as he is, he comes up with a very eloquent “Huh-what?”
“You know,” Peter seems partly entertained and partly nervous as he drops his voice to clarify, “Sexually.”

After Ray survived by a miracle, he has been rotting in the Freeport’s hospital for longer than he would think. By the time he got released, weird thoughts and feelings that were not his usual ones would occur, making him confused, not even letting him fall asleep. They all seemed to flow around Pete.

Why people go crazy and do stupid shit in the name of love and sex. Because Ray, well Ray would die for the boy underneath him. But Ray is also a mess of anxiety and self-loathing, still unsure as to why Pete would want me. Two conflicting natures that make Ray want to run away and also want to never be not touching Pete again. So, they’ve been working up to this.
