"Hey, Monkey King?"
Monkey King hummed his acknowledgement, the sound rounding out into the same coo MK had heard him use with the monkeys around the island.
"What's it… like? Being a monkey demon?"
"Mmm, tough question," his mentor answered. "It's hard to explain. Monkey demons have a lot of the same instincts as normal monkeys, but some of the same as humans. It's kind of a weird middle area. Macaque could probably give you a better answer."
OR: MK and Wukong have a day off, exploring a not-so-new part of Flower Fruit Mountain.

"Seriously." Macaque's eyes flicked up and down, scanning him. "What's going on? You're really struggling with the focus today. Wukong said you were out of it when you guys trained the other day, too."
MK deflated, lowering his staff. He stayed silent as his gaze fell, avoiding Macaque's scrutiny. He was really hoping he could avoid talking.
OR: MK struggles dealing with dissociative episodes and insecurity, and meditating doesn't help. He can't get it together. Macaque helps him through it.

"It's not late." Wukong stiffly tried, a nervous smile twitching the corner of his lip.
Sure, he usually would've gone to bed a few hours ago, but it wasn't that unusual for Wukong to be up a little late.
"Not for me, no." Macaque corrected. His suspicion was punctuated with a brow quirked high, "But for you? You like your beauty sleep."
OR: Macaque doesn't realize tomorrow is a special day.

Summary
Athras and Tallis aren't friends.
They work together because they have to, they're two out of four parts of Unit Viper, a team sent to work against the Dread Wolf.
They happen to sleep together on a regular basis, but it's purely physical. Just taking care of a need. Anything more was unnecessary and asking for hurt. Athras goes to meet Tallis as usual but things don't follow their typical routine.

Wukong pauses mid-action with mildly widened eyes, his own action registering in his head a beat too late. He stares at the lantern, Macaque stares too, but it's fine; they've both broken worse. They've made entire mountain ranges their collateral damage. They are beings that are larger than this room.
And it doesn't hurt to see the old proof of their coexistence torn apart on the ground.

Macaque has never had thoughts like this before. They frighten him, for more reasons than one.
First, because it challenges who he is, the very essence of his being that he’s always been so sure of.
Second, because they are not fleeting anymore; they’re downright distracting.
And third, because Wukong does not mean any of his kisses or touches that way, and Macaque is twisting them and taking them as something they are not, using them as something they are not.
Macaque struggles with pining for his best friend.
