The tile was hard beneath his knees as he bowed over, rounding his spine under the hot water till his forehead was pressed to the floor. The stretch helped for a second, but before he could enjoy the reprieve, the pressure had already built back up.
It was too much. Something was wrong, the realization suddenly hitting him that he really did need to call for help—

Summary
Telling the whole story’s basically every form of whiplash rolled up into one, so: Steve usually goes with the abridged version, as best he can, when he absolutely has to explain.
Basically: after he swung a bat at a petal mouthed hellbeast, he felt weird for a few days after. He got a rash; woke up for a week with the hardest scabs he’d ever seen, like pebbles, and less blood colored. Weird.
The second time, in hindsight, is probably what makes it…worse. Like, as in: longterm worse. The dust, the stuff in those tunnels? It felt alive, like it got in your lungs to burrow and choke with intent. And Steve’s little bandana-mask was better than nothing, he guesses, just…
Not better enough, as becomes very clear once Steve starts half-turning into a fucking demogorgon, like an stress-triggered were…y’know, wolf would be better.
Than this.
It’s a bitch, but he handles it. Learns how to deal. Hopes life’s calmed down enough when he meets, and falls for, Eddie Munson—hopes that it won’t be a concern any longer.
And it isn’t. A concern.
Just not…not at all the way Steve expects.

Or more correctly, a B.O.W. that looked unnervingly similar to himself. It was a bit shorter, carapace a much lighter brown and spikes not nearly as elongated, and staring at him with mouth agape.
“Who are you?” Leon growled, and the B.O.W. raised its hands defensively.

Overall, it had been only a few months since Izuku’s diagnosis, and things had been good. The six-year-old was making friends at school, something that had relieved Shouta to no end. He had been afraid his child was taking after him, what with how lonely Izuku always seemed to be, extroverted in ways but introverted where it mattered. But then Izuku had come home one day with a black eye and a missing tooth, looking the happiest he’d ever been. Shouta had nearly had a coronary, but- with the look on Izuku’s face when he told his Dad how he’d helped someone, he’d made a friend, he’d been a Hero- Shouta couldn’t be too angry.
So, yes, things had been going well. Which was why Shouta was waiting for the other shoe to drop.
