The feeling had returned again, the one that told Fives that he had gotten into something well over his head. He ignored it. It was a feeling he was well accustomed to, and there was no point in regretting what was already done. Maybe it was that they shouldn’t have blown up that transport and caught the eye of those Trandoshans. Or, maybe it was that they shouldn’t have taken that job from the Twi’lek with the missing eye in the first place.
Or, maybe it was that he shouldn’t have gone and gotten himself killed in a Coruscanti warehouse two years ago while trying and failing to do the right thing.
Well, he thought, it’s not like that matters right now.

Jordie Rietveld stood in the doorway panting lightly from exertion, nervousness oozing from every pore in his body, but with his back ramrod straight. “I need your help,” he said.
Kaz was tempted to slam the door in his face and lay down in his bed to sleep off whatever hallucinogenic concoction the Black Tips had managed to slip into his coffee that morning. Maybe Jesper had a point about him needing to catch more sleep.

That inspires a potent mix of excitement and jealousy. And frustration, too, but not at Dean. At their other drivers—no one can keep up, so Colt keeps having to make concessions.
He doesn’t want to propose concessions to Jody. He wants to give her the best he possibly can.
He wants to be in that other car.

Colt and Dan run a successful stunt studio. Colt's happy with Jody, whose next big project will take her back to her breakout hit, Metalstorm. Everything is going well in his life. He should be content.
But Colt's starving for something he can't name, and as the newest hire at the studio weaves his way into Colt and Jody's life, Colt wonders what it'd feel like to sink his teeth in and not let go.

The driver has a very strange relationship with pain. It’s one of the many, many pieces of himself that he knows don’t fit the way they do with other people: one of the things that makes him not much of a person at all. No. That isn’t quite right. The two are tied. The day pain stopped meaning much to Driver was the day it stopped being a person.
(He is sixteen, when he gets that car. The feeling that envelops him, that first night in his— his!— car, is both totally foreign and the softest thing the driver has ever felt. Something surges through Driver’s chest, hot and fierce and strong. The sound that bubbles out of him is somewhere between a laugh and a hiccuping sob, but Driver doesn’t care. It feels good.)
