"And is like I said, very easy to do. You just lay back and let someone else do work. Could do it in my sleep, would not be problem at all for me to come hands-free.”
Hollander scowled, full competitive personality shining through. “Prove it.”
“Fine, I will,” Ilya snapped back.
Hollander's eyes went wide, and so did Ilya's when he realized what he had promised. His words hung in the air between them, suddenly heavy with implication.
---
Ilya doesn't think switching with Hollander one time for the sake of settling a bet will change anything about their arrangement, and it certainly wouldn't make him discover anything about himself. Afterall, it would only be one time, right?- Language:

Summary
The best way to describe this work, I think, is as a novelization of the television series told from Ilya Rozanov's point of view. What happens in the series will happen, more or less, in this work.
Please note, I did read both Heated Rivalry and The Long Game by Rachel Reid, but that was some time ago and my recollection of them is spotty at best. Because they are novels and this is a written story, I did NOT consult the books in order to reduce the chance that I would inadvertently plagiarize them. That means that where the television series leaves a gap in the narrative, I may fill it with something very different than what happens in the books. We will all end up at the cottage, but some of us are taking a slightly different path to get there.
This novelization means that potentially triggering things that happen in the series (like mental health issues) will happen in this work. NOTE, HOWEVER, no new issues will be added in this work. No one dies. No one is outed. No one is assaulted. This is just the story of the show as if it were from Ilya's point of view.

Ilya is plummeting to his death when he closes his eyes, heart full of regret.
When he opens them in what feels like just a second later, he is standing outside a rink in Regina, Saskatchewan. There’s a banner on the building across the street:
World Junior Hockey Championship 2009.

“Missed me that much?” He whispers tiredly but with a hint of mirth anyway when he feels how hard her fingers curl into the fabric of his jacket.
“You fucking idiot,” she whispers against his neck and Gale feels something tugging at him again, a warm trickle rattling his ransacked chest cavity, something that thrums in his chest that isn’t guilt.
(They are: Soulmates in a war, paired up like it was something empty, like love is nothing but wounds and half-lives. But they've always been more than heavy prints on skin anyway).
or; Gale, Johanna and the same-bruise soulmate au no one really asked for but I had over 20k words to say
