Summary
Zuko is banished. Never to return to his Nation unless he does the impossible. But when Agni, Dragon of the Sun, gives Zuko a mission, he has a new purpose in life besides pretending to still be loyal to his father. With Azula playing defense at the palace, Zuko has the whole world to search for answers and the people who Agni says will be Champions of the Elements and help him restore balance to the world. Summary
The next Avatar, Korra, needs to learn airbending. She doesn’t expect to be adopted by a dragon, the previous Avatar’s mate, and forced to stop a terrorist during her training, but it could have been worse. After all, former Fire Lord Azula was her firebender teacher only a few weeks before the madness began. The Pupa Republic's chaos had nothing on that.
(Technically, you don't need to read the previous installments to understand this, but there are spoilers for the previous installments, and the past stories do give some background information.)

The smoke dissipates and–
Holy shit.
There are no–holy Tui and La’s left pec–there are no words that can even begin to describe the magnificent creature that jumps into the air.
It's beautiful, is what Sokka’s brain manages to offer, followed immediately by the more pressing realization that his brain is not currently offering literally anything else.
He’s never seen something like it. Its deep, reflective scales make the ground glow red, and its tail swishes in dangerous waves against the dirt from where it rests. Its wings unfurl slowly, hesitantly expanding with flawless grace, and nothing that Sokka has ever seen could compare. Not like the polarbear-dogs back at home or even Appa or Momo. Its eyes rake over them, and Sokka is suddenly, acutely aware that he is standing in front of something that could absolutely decide he is lunch.
Sokka’s mind has never connected to his mouth in situations involving potential death. And the longer the silence stretches, the louder his survival instincts beg him to do anything but stand there and take it like a man.
So really, you can’t blame him.
“IS THAT A DRAGON?!”
He gets a puff of smoke in his face for his efforts.

Summary
The Fire Nation royal family are half dragon, as they are descended from dragons. Zuko joins the Gaang early after his banishment. One year into his banishment, Zuko gives up wanting to capture the Avatar in order to come back home. Instead he wants to help the Avatar. However when Zuko does find the Avatar and his companions, to say they don’t like him is an understatement.

Summary
“What do you remember?” Sokka asks, even though he knows he shouldn’t. Even though he knows better.
But he also knew better than to save a dragon from certain death.
The dragon is silent for so long that Sokka thinks it won’t answer him. He watches the rise and fall of its chest just to ensure it isn’t dead.
"Burning," it answers eventually. "I remember burning."
Or: Sokka finds a wounded dragon outside of his village a month before his sister discovers the Avatar trapped in the ice.
