“What? It’s true. I tried to hold him twice, and he started crying immediately”
Sophie knew her husband was not actually hurt by it. He understood Charles was just hours old and would still need time adjusting to him, but she couldn’t help a little grin forming on her lips.
“Well, I think it’s only fair. You already have Violet, let me have Charles.”

Sophie saw no reason to keep from smiling too. “That is all. Thank you, Mrs. Crabtree”, then, she added “I know it is quite impossible, but… could we try to keep this between us? The doctor will be here, I know, but I would’t want to give the rest of the servants false hope. You could tell them that I’m feeling a little under the weather, perhaps…”.
Sophie knew that she and Benedict were not the only ones who wanted a baby in the house. Everyone in Our Cottage did. She once overheard two of the kitchen servants talking about what a lovely couple they were, and one of them said something like ‘could you imagine how adorable their children will be?’.
“As you wish, ma’am”, Mrs. Crabtree said, almost making her way out, but then turned back, “But if a may… I do not think it would be false hope at all.” She gave Sophie one more warm smile, and at last exited the room.
