The events of the day would swell behind his eyes like a punishing wave, chased by regrets long-since past and arguments he could have won if he’d only said the right things, the right words. Those words were… loud, he found, in the darkness. Clarity came swiftest when the dark ceiling stared down at him like this. It chased the sleep from his body and taunted him like few other things could—which said something, he supposed, given the other biggest source of taunts in his life lay sleeping just on the other side of the wall flush with his headboard.

    “I – don’t want to frighten you,” he hissed, “the blemishes are so ugly and might turn you off.”

    (No matter how professional or proficient the Amurta graduates treated him, Kaveh never felt healed. But here, right now, in Alhaitham’s embrace, he almost forgot that he only had one arm.)
