“Oh…” she breaths. “This is the Other Universe.” That must make sense to Ekko because his eyes widen and although he doesn’t move back again she can see a layer of wariness ripple over him. Now she can see how open he was being with her because it all shuts down neatly, and he’s not being unfriendly as much as she can now see how much he trusts Powder. Her Ekko had told her about this. He’d draped his coat around her, she'd asked him about that machine he’d made and he’d looked at her long and hard before he’d replied, wetting his lips.

Ekko traps the head of a bad nail between the grips of his hammer and works it out of a half-rotten plank. He sets it on a pile of other rusty nails.
“I guessed.”
“No. You knew.”
There’s no accusation in her tone, just a matter-of-fact statement. Calling him out on his bullshit.
Ekko gets to working on another nail. He doesn’t respond. But he doesn’t deny it, either.
He hears her let out a breath through her nose. Like she’s figured something out. Maybe she has; she always knew him too well. He sort of hoped that after all this time, she couldn’t still do that.
But somehow, he’s not surprised.
