Yoshiki was silent. I’m not sick. Or at least that's what he wanted to believe. He had the impression there were a million eyes staring at him from out the window, and another million eyes sprouting from the walls, a watermelon made only of seeds.
“Did he like you back?”

Hikaru's mama just clicked her tongue and gave a fond sigh, "that boy, always runnin' off somewhere, it's fine, I'll catch'im up later. Why don't we all head over together?"

“I’m sorry,” he’d said, voice breaking, dropping to his knees like he’d been struck. “I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I thought—you like birds. You said they were beautiful. I saw a cat leave one once. I thought—this is how you show love.”
He’d sobbed. Real tears. Ugly, gasping cries that clawed their way out of him like they hurt.
Hikaru had sworn it was already dead. Had promised, over and over, that he hadn’t killed it. That he’d only found it. That he’d only wanted to make Yoshiki happy. That he would never do it again.
