   Summary

   It was just past three in the morning. Sleep still clung to Renji Abarai’s eyes as he stood at the entrance of the Fifth Division barracks, jaw tight. His daughter had only just been born, and he had been granted leave to remain with his wife Rukia Kuchiki. Yet here he was anyway, standing rigid with one hand resting on the hilt of his blade. He was a mess, shihakushō tied improperly, lieutenant’s badge missing, eyes full of fear, doubt, and something dangerously close to grief as he rushed from his marital bed to stand in the rain.

   It confirmed the message Byakuya Kuchiki had received only minutes earlier.

   Captain Shinji Hirako was dead.
