Summary
The night of Antonio's ceremony, Dolores hears Mirabel - and she definitely wasn't supposed to.
This causes Dolores to reflect on herself and her family and their actions - and to realize that they must do better if they don't want to lose Mirabel the way that they lost Bruno.
The whole Madrigal family is involved, but it's mostly Dolores and Mirabel centric

Summary
He looks too tense and too tired. Like a man trying to mentally prepare himself for a battle he has no energy left to fight.
Verso doesn't want to fight him.
“Hey,” says softly.
His copy glances at him, almost startled. Then looks down again. Hesitates. Blinks a couple of times; nervously licks his lips. “I'm sorry,” croaks.
Verso tilts his head. “For what?”
His copy shrugs. “For existing.”
Or: at the end of the world, Verso meets a familiar face.

Gustave is brought back to life and he imprints on Verso like an animal /j
***
The first person Gustave sees when he returns, though, is not his foster sister Maelle, with her ginger ponytail and placid, grey eyes. It’s Verso, and like some animalistic freak he latches on to the man’s visage like a lifeline. Those grey eyes are seared into his vision like twin moons, and that dark, impossibly lush hair shines with the brilliant streaks of moonlight within it. He’s old, but not really. Older, and carries with him the experience of being elsewhere in the world.
“Who are you?” Gustave asks, and it’s like no one else exists in the world. Maybe Maelle answers. Maybe she doesn’t. But what Gustave knows is that Verso is someone he should take the time to get to know, however that process comes about. Gustave yearns, and for the first time in a long time, he listens.Bookmarked by Yanagy

Summary
Neither of them really thought it would work. Monoco had just made a dumb comment about Verso’s feet as he disrobed for sex, and one thing led to another.
“Oh shit, that worked?” Verso said, lying on his back with his leg outstretched for Monoco to grab. “Huh. How do you feel?”
Monoco felt — well, he felt a lot.
Or: Monoco uses a dumb loophole to turn into Verso and then gets fucked in the ass about it.

Summary
It doesn't matter. No matter the story, Verso has a chance to die still being of use.
He'll provoke him into a fight. Try and kill him, as hopeless as the notion may be. If he wins, a 'monster' is no longer haunting this place. If he loses, then the vampire will feed on him. Then he'll be nothing.
He wants to lose. Being a free meal is better than living.
OR
Verso, the last Dessendre, goes to find the resident vampire in Lumiere's woods with some elaborate suicide mission. He doesn't expect the vampire to take him to his home instead. He doesn't expect to fall in love either.

”Drink from me,” Gustave says like it’s that simple, and Verso’s heart – a raw, feral thing that barely beats as it is – screeches to a sudden halt.
His jaw drops and he gapes at Gustave. ”No. No, no, you’re not serious.”
Gustave isn’t fazed by it, at all.”
In which Verso’s a vampire, the Expedition is over and Gustave finds him in the Lumiére Gardens and makes an offer. Includes mutual pining, blood-drinking and them being completely stupid about each other.

Summary
The thing that sits in front of him is a bloody mess. A ghost oozing blood in the pale moonlight of the continent, a most terrifying hallucination, one that Verso is beginning to get used to.
It is a manifestation of his guilt, one that is not likely to go away for sometime. The thing, the man, was named Gustave. And his absence is an unfillable void, one that Verso has no choice but to take. He made that void in the first place.
He sees Gustave on quiet lonely nights, he catches glimpses of him through dense trees, and sometimes as a dark sentinel standing far away in the distance.
But tonight the ghost has joined him next to the fire of the expedition's camp.

Summary
"It's a big thing," Sciel says, conversationally. "Having one. It changes the shape of everything. Pierre, Lune, and I—we talked about it for a long time before. It still managed to surprise us, how much." She glances at him. "Do you ever think about it?"
The question lands lightly. That is the thing about Sciel—she puts things down rather than pressing them in. Verso is aware, not for the first time, that this is probably what makes her so effective at interrogations like these.
"I think Gustave has found his way to something that works," he says, which is not an answer to the question she asked, and they both know it. "He's not—wanting for anything. He's got more than enough people in his life who need him."
Sciel makes a small sound. Not disagreement, exactly.
"What," Verso says.
"Nothing." A pause. "I'm just—thinking about what 'enough' means,” she looks at him sideways, "and I think you're avoiding the question."In which two people who had stopped expecting things discover, somewhat belatedly, that they want the same one.

Summary
After the events at Stone Wave Cliffs, Gustave awakens in a liminal space suspended between canvas and reality where a faceless child paints without end. What begins as an intellectual puzzle Gustave cannot abandon gradually transforms into something else entirely: the stubborn effort to save his sister’s life and the fragile canvas she sustains, while also proving—patiently, against every layer of refusal—to a man who has long ceased to believe in his own worth that he is permitted, perhaps even deserving, to have a real, finite life.

Summary
The Expedition is over, and while the city celebrates, Gustave can’t shake the chilling feeling that he didn’t come back whole.
Plagued by inexplicable gaps in his memory, a crushing, bone-deep exhaustion, and nightmares that leave him utterly lost, Gustave finds the familiar routines of Lumière unbearable.
He begins to drift away from his old life, seeking solace in the one place where pretense isn't required: the quiet company of a man he is slowly getting to know better.
-
Just a heads up: this story is heavy on the angst at first, but I promise the slow burn kicks in later. Also, please bear with me through the first chapter, I swear the writing gets better 🫣

Summary
“Now I'm going to wash your beard,” Verso muttered suddenly in a low voice, and Gustave obediently nodded and tilted his chin towards his chest, still keeping his eyes closed. Verso leaned over him and rinsed his cheeks, mouth and neck with hot water. The sound of the girls' conversations and laughter faded into the background, the world narrowing to the measured Gustave’s breathing on fingertips and his own heartbeat.
“You have very gentle hands,” Gustave tilted his head back again, exposing it to the water, and opened his eyes. Verso panicked silently. “You must have many years of experience.”
“Oh, the inability to die gives one the opportunity to master one's hobby to perfection,” Verso joked. Gustave touched the back of his hand and said nothing, only stroking knuckles with his thumb, and before Verso could come up with the brilliant idea of catching his hand, he hid it under the water.
“Someday you'll have to open up to us, won't you, Verso?”

Summary
A protector. A strong, smart, loving brother. A dreamer. A joker. A sacrifice she had never asked for and a loss that had shattered her.
There! She’d found it. The chroma was right there, bright and bountiful and so much closer than she would have thought after all these months. Maelle grasped it and pulled, eyes screwed shut and sweat beading on her brow.
Behind her, Verso made a strangled sound. Monoco clattered to his feet, crying out, and Esquie took to the air calling, “Mon ami!”

“Mark me,” Verso demanded against Gustave’s mouth. “I want to feel it tomorrow.”
Gustave’s eyes flashed. Then his mouth was on Verso’s throat, teeth scraping, biting, and the sharp pain made Verso gasp.
Gustave’s nails raked down Verso’s back, scratching hard enough to draw blood. Marking him, like he wanted . Claiming him.
And Verso loved the violence. Loved the proof that this was real, that Gustave wanted him enough to leave marks. The Fracture Zone is where people are sent to die.
Painters and Writers, enemies for five hundred years, embark on expeditions to reach the Monolith. None survive—until Expedition 33.
Gustave Virlogeux has lost almost everything, and his grief has turned to rage.
