Robby’s gaze roamed across Dennis's face, tracing the planes and sharp angles of his features like he was trying to commit them to memory. He already had a long time ago. The horrible, aching knot in his chest dedicated to Dennis was a piece of Robby that he tried, time and time again, to rip out. Always to no avail.
If he had anything to come back for, it’d be this one thing.
"Marry me," Robby said.
Robby, about to head out for his sabbatical and never return, thinks to hell with it—nothing matters except for the very real, very inappropriate feelings he's been harboring for his first-year resident. So he proposes. And before he can take it back, Whitaker says yes.

Which is understandable, of course. This storm is hella gnarly. Granted, it's not the worst they've endured while sharing a hotel room. Last season, there was one so bad that (nearly) everyone in the Sharks group chat was convinced The Doom was upon them. Yet Mack slept like a baby. In his own bed. The entire night.
"I can't sleep with all that ruckus outside," Will lies, "so I want you to tell me a secret to keep my mind off it."

“Shut up!” Mack shouted, running his fingers through his hair. “Just shut the fuck up and let me think.”
“Yeah, good luck with that.”
“Dick.”
“Brat.”
They stared at each other for a moment, and Will knew they felt the same thing. Neither of them could put it into words though.
“Fuck you,” Mack bit out through his tight mouth.

“I fucking told you so many times,” Nate says, still laughing and crying. “How many times did I tell you to get a new phone? More than I can even fucking count. But -”
“I like the button,” Sid frowns. “The newer ones don’t have the button.”
“The newer ones have software updates,” Nate says.
“I’m doing just fine running iOS whatever on my iPhone 8,” Sid argues. They talk about this a lot. Nate usually complains about Sid’s phone because it’s old.
“Yeah, well, it turns out, iOS 11 stopped getting security updates back in 2018,” Nate says.
Sid rolls his eyes. “I have a password on my phone and I’m very careful not to lose it.” He’s not lying, either. He loves his phone, and it’s hard to find the ones with the button nowadays. If he loses it, he’ll have to get one of the ones without a button, and that seems like a true nightmare.
“Your phone is connected to the internet,” Nate sighs. His tone of voice is still slightly hysterical, but also as though he’s talking to a particularly stubborn, stupid five-year-old kid. “People can hack it easily because it’s connected to the internet and you haven’t updated the software since 2018.”

“Don’t be cheap,” Cale says, bumping into him as they skate toward the benches. “You’re buying me guac and a drink. You can afford it.”
“Expensive date, eh, Cale?” Jo asks.
“He’s definitely not as cheap a date as you are,” Nate says.
Cale eyes Jo up and down. “I don’t believe for one second that Jo is a cheap date,” he says confidently. He and Jo lock eyes for a moment before Cale turns back to Nate. “Tacos. Guac. Drink. Let’s go.”

Will has a tendency to fall in love with things the way only boys raised on promises of paradise and unbearable guilt can, unknowingly and devastatingly complete.
He sometimes wonders if wanting something can ever be clean, if desire and goodness can ever coexist inside his body. He tells himself that it doesn’t matter anymore, but maybe he’s just learned to lie so convincingly he starts to believe it.
Because the guilt always comes back in the end, it claws at his chest, while the fear settles low in his stomach and panic makes it hard to breathe, and it all just leaves his heart aching like a wound that never heals.
But then there’s Mack, who makes Will want to break every rule he’s ever been taught.
