    Square: First Date

“Don't hurt him. You might think what this old woman’s gonna do? But I will—”
“You? Old? Please. You don't look a day over fifty five.” Harvey scoffed, interrupting her shovel-talk.
“Aren't you a smooth talker.” She laughed and reached out, tugging his cheek.
That was when Mike walked into the living room.
“Uhh—what’s going on here?” he asked, eyes darting between Harvey and his grandmother.
Edith smiled. “You've got a good man here, Michael. If you won't date him, I will.”
“Oh god, Grammy, please don't say that—”
“If I hadn't met him earlier—” Harvey smiled, all charming, ever the ladies’ man.
“Not you too!” Mike groaned as Edith and Harvey burst out laughing.
“We’re gonna go now,” Mike said quickly, leaning down to kiss her cheek. “Bye, Grammy.”
“Bye, Michael.” She turned to Harvey and added, in a mock-stern voice, “And you, young man, bring him back by twelve.”
“Gam, I'm not a kid anymore!” Mike whined, which only proved her point.
“Yes, ma’am, I'll make sure of it.” Harvey replied, smiling ear to ear.

    Summary

Somehow, in the stretch between a quiet Tuesday morning and the sun setting on a frosty Thursday, Mike had convinced Donna that the office needed a Christmas party. Donna, in turn, had convinced Jessica. And once Jessica approved anything, Harvey found himself with exactly zero escape routes.

So here he was. Surrounded by twinkling lights, evergreen garlands, too-loud carols, and a punch bowl full of eggnog that made him question the state of his own taste buds. All of it felt like a coordinated attack on his personal comfort. Donna insisted it was "festive," but Harvey suspected she got a kick out of watching him tolerate things he had explicitly said he wanted no part of.

“Harvey, this is not in the rules.” Donna mutters the next day, folding her arms as she stands inside his office.

Harvey raises an eyebrow. “Excuse me?”

“Sending me your Secret Santa, with the words make it fancy!” Donna narrows her eyes and pauses for a second. “So you’re going to make it a date night?”

Harvey avoids her eyes. It’s easier to not say the word date out loud. “He’s getting the Harvey Specter dinner experience.”

“So it’s a date, got it. Steak and red wine?”

“This is Mike, so it’ll likely be beer and pizza with cheese in the crust.”

    Summary

Mike had crossed that line somewhere around his fourth drink, maybe his fifth, the exact number blurring into an impression of confidence and warmth that sat loose in his chest. He laughed too easily, leaned too close, talked with his hands like he always did when his thoughts ran faster than his mouth. Harvey watched him from the other side of the small round table, nursing a scotch and pretending he was not counting.

Mike had been celebrating. That was the official excuse. He had won an argument with Louis earlier that day, which Harvey privately considered less of a victory and more of a temporary ceasefire, but Mike had insisted it counted. Harvey had let him have it. A few months ago he would have shut this down before it started. A few months ago he would have left Mike to get plastered with Rachel and gone home alone. Things changed quietly, the way they tended to with them.
