He told himself he watched her out of strategy—that Clarisse La Rue would have been invaluable to Kronos. It was easier than admitting that her fire made him feel something he’d forgotten how to. The fixation crept in slowly. Luke barely spoke to her, yet he imagined her often—her anger turned toward him, her defiance sharpened into obedience. He told himself it was about control, about power, but he knew deep down that he was lying to himself. It was unhealthy. When Percy exposed his betrayal and Luke fled Camp Half-Blood, Clarisse should have faded with the rest of his old life. Instead, Kronos tore through Luke’s mind and found her waiting there, a quiet weakness Luke hadn’t had the strength to kill. The Titan dragged the feeling back to the surface, deeper, more consuming. Luke watched Clarisse obsessively as his plan for the Golden Fleece unfolded, only to feel fate twist cruel when she was chosen for the quest. All he could do was hope Percy reached the Fleece first—because hurting Clarisse was one more loss he wouldn't survive.
