Summary
It's been three sweeps since Karkat and his friends became adults and left Alternia, losing all contact along the way. Karkat has spent those three sweeps under the care of the Signless's cult, who have shepherded him from planet to planet as they waited and hoped he would develop some spark of divine inspiration. None came.
Time has run out. While hiding out on a border planet, Karkat's sect was discovered by a pack of laughsassins, headed by the High Threshecutioner, and Karkat's lifespan can now be measured in seconds.
But fate's not quite done using Karkat as its chew toy. It might be cliché, but what happens if your mortal enemy is also your childhood friend, and he's willing to break every taboo to get you back?

Karkat hated the planet almost immediately, but with his home planet too dangerous for mutants, he really didn’t have any choice but to hide out on this weird little diurnal planet. At least he’d be safe. Or so he thought, right before blundering his way into an accidental friendship with the son of an anti-troll terrorist.

Aka famous movie director "D Strider" pays Karkat to review his shitty movies, and Karkat grows increasingly alarmed that they actually mean something under all of the mind-numbing bullshit. Meeting Strider, the biggest douchebag in the world, does not help. Also he keeps meeting this annoyingly smart human kid and his awkward/obnoxious but very hot guardian. These two things are entirely unrelated.
