    Hugh always thought about moments like these. A wife in the passenger, an eager child in the backseat on their way to the California beach. And no matter how he altered it, he knew it wasn't possible. No woman would realistically stay, no child would realistically be good under his care. That sort of domesticity wasn't meant for him. He had accepted that a long time ago. Yet now, as he glanced at Diana from behind his sunglasses, he couldn't help the sense of peace that welled inside of him.

    He felt alive. His life had purpose beyond exploring space. He was content in space. It was the best contribution he made to the world. Yet this little girl had somehow wiggled her way into his guarded heart. Now all he wanted was to keep her safe. All he wanted was to be a good father.
