Summary
Severus never received nice things. He never won the game, came out on top, or received first prize. Severus built his whole persona around being on the fringes of everyone’s lives, and he certainly did not like to reveal his private life on a public stage. Severus knew firsthand that falling often feels like flying until the bone-crush, but one beautiful witch and one magical Christmas Eve might make him change his mind.
Suddenly, the limelight that followed Hermione Granger around might not be so much of an issue for him, not if she was on his arm and by his side, that is. He might, in fact, bask in this Gold Rush for as long as she allowed him to do so.

The tattoos on Severus’s chest swirled in recognition of Hermione’s surge of magic. Like an oncoming storm, he could smell the petrichor in the air. As Severus watched from across the room, Hermione smiled felinely, poised to deliver the final verbal blow to her ex-partner, Ron Weasley, as she demurely sipped her glass of Chianti. The moment Hermione’s eyes locked with his own over her glass, Severus knew he was done for. She would be his unmaking and rebirth. The night was over for them, it was time to leave. With every ounce of confidence he could muster, Severus threw back the rest of his firewhiskey and walked up to the woman who had somehow bewitched him, body and soul.

Mulder had no right to interrupt this domesticity. This was not his world and he could never belong. He needed to leave, because if she did look through the snow into the car window where he sat and locked eyes with him, he knew the horrified look he would see. She thought he was long dead and cold in the ground, after all. He knew because she drove last week to visit his grave.

Summary
Thirteen years after leaving Hogwarts, Hermione Granger is Not Okay. Her relationship with Ron has crumbled. She's burnt out and quit the Auror Office. She still hasn't been able to find her parents to reverse their memory spell, and all her money has gone on a probably-repossessed house and a wedding which will never happen. Harry and Ginny would let her stay on their sofa forever, of course, but they have a new baby, and Hermione has enough trouble sleeping. So she's left with one, final, awful choice - to go to the only place she knows she can't be turned away: the house of the insufferable man whose life she saved the day Voldemort died - Severus Snape.
Snape is, shall we say, not pleased with this turn of events.
