Not much is known of Steve before 1943 and he likes it that way.
When asked about his father, he says he died of mustard gas in WW1 before he was born.
When asked about his mother, he says she was the model American woman of her time.
When asked about Sargent Barnes, he says he couldn't have asked for a better best friend. Such a boy scout, like the comics.
Those become the short truths of his past when Steve Rogers became Captain America. Nice. Sweet. Marketable....too bad these truths ain't worth shit.

A distress signal gets broadcast into the New Avengers Tower, and weirdly, its timestamp reads 1949. Yelena thinks nothing of it until she reports it to Bucky, who thoroughly loses his shit. And so this ragtag dysfunctional team’s first mission ends up being to New York City, 1949 to save Steve Rogers from one incredible returning-the-Infinity-Stones mission fuck-up. Or, in other words, to get Bucky his boyfriend back.
