Summary
Koito’s just arrived in Asahikawa to join the 7th Division, but to his dismay, Tsurumi has to leave for Tokyo to visit Central. Without his beloved superior’s guidance, the newly minted second lieutenant must get the lay of the land on base, learn the politics that make up the division’s hierarchy, and familiarize himself with the soldiers he’s meant to lead. Under Tsurumi’s orders, Tsukishima is there to help him (with little enthusiasm), but Koito is more drawn to another, friendlier face who promises to show him the ropes. Everyone keeps giving him and his new friend strange looks, but he should just ignore them, right?

Summary
A vein throbs in Tsukishima’s neck as he pours tea into his own cup. He can’t help himself. “Why not train him in poetry instead, sir?”
“To what end?” Tsurumi asks.
Tsukishima shrugs and sets down the kettle with a light clatter. “You could always use another soldier-poet. They make the ugliest things sound beautiful.”
Finally, Tsurumi looks back at him. His eyes are empty and round, opened just a millimeter wider than usual. Instantly, Tsukishima knows he’s said the wrong thing.

After taking Koito's virginity, Tsurumi calls in Tsukishima to interpret their pillow talk. Tsukishima hears a confession he wasn't meant to hear, and now he can't stop thinking about how Tsurumi leaves it unanswered.

“What, you feel bad?” Ogata squinted his eyes. “That’s not like you, Tsukishima.”
Tsukishima shook his head firmly. “I don’t feel bad. Lieutenant Tsurumi ordered it, so it needs to be done. I just don’t know how I’m going to be able to actually…” he trailed off, his eyes unfocusing.
Ogata shrugged and ran a hand through his own hair. “Can’t be that hard. I’ve done much worse and I don’t feel any guilt for it—don’t try to tell me you’re any different."
Ogata and Tsukishima are ordered by Lieutenant Tsurumi to mind-break Koito in a very specific way. Tsukishima accidentally catches feelings.
