He thought there was a moment or two where Rook was flirting with him, showing interest in getting closer, and now…he isn’t sure if he’s just projecting his own desires onto her actions, and even if he isn’t, or wasn’t, she’s clearly chosen to pursue Davrin, and its just another tick in the column of things that the Ossuary stole from him.
He can’t even blame Spite, not really, Rook isn’t afraid of him being possessed, and Spite is constantly pushing against the boundaries of their connection to get as close to Rook as possible.
Not even the connection of their Crow background was enough to override his absolute lack of charm.
Now she’s back in Arlathan, Assan and Davrin and a picnic basket that Emmrich of all people helped prepare, and Lucanis wants to be happy for them but alone in the Lighthouse courtyard, staring out into the sky that isn’t sky, he can’t quite manage it.

Cliff gapes at him.In which the hit that Cliff Marleau had on Shane Hollander goes a little different. For one, they’re in Boston. For another, Ilya realizes he might be panicking? Which is probably not something to do in the middle of a game. And, oh yeah, he just outed both himself and his not-boyfriend to an entire locker room of hockey players.
But that’s okay, because while Boston may be vicious, they do take care of their own. And they quickly realize that their captain’s happiness and willingness to stay with the Bears is tied to Shane Hollander. The solution is easy, they’ll just have to make Shane Hollander a Bear.

Summary
It’s like they’re in a fucked up game of relationship chicken now, increasingly doing things together that Shane can’t describe as anything other than domestic and romantic and boyfriend-like. They text constantly, detailing their days and sharing everything from complaints about teammates to jokes about other players in the league to the kind of quiet worries about family that don’t need to be responded to, just heard by another person.
Or maybe it’s like Schroedinger’s cat. As long as Shane doesn’t ask, doesn’t speak out loud, he can have this. It can exist, and it cannot exist at the same time as long as Shane doesn’t press too hard. Doesn’t want too much.
It feels increasingly like agony now that he’s realized that he loves Ilya.

Tunameltdown AU where Ilya makes him tuna melts and says his name and Shane doesn’t freak out and run away. Well, he does freak out, but he also stays. Or the one where Shane doesn’t realize that Ilya’s his boyfriend for a solid three months.
