    Summary

Tenten kisses each of the girls noisily, and Neji patiently waits his turn like a good husband for his loud smack on the cheek. Lee cries, predictably, scooping both his sons and husband into a geometrically improbable group hug. He’s not an old hand at being away from his kids like his former teammates are, but even if he were, he’d still activate the waterworks. It takes Tenten tapping her foot and threateningly spinning a kunai on one finger before he finally deigns to leave.

The moment the door slams behind them, Neji turns to Gaara.

    “Well,” he says. “Now what?”

Neji’s voice remained neutral even as his irritation grew. “You went to Lee first?”

“Neji, c’mon,” Ino said with a dry chuckle, “retirement has not made you more welcoming. If you had to pick someone to talk to first, would you really choose the brooding, silent war hero from a prestigious clan, or the fun guy with great vibes who wears a colorful jumpsuit?"

“Sai,” Neji said, his voice low and warning. “If I open this and it contains anything strange... I will burn it.”

Sai’s smile didn’t waver. “I believe I have calibrated it correctly this time. But art is subjective.”

Neji weighed the scroll in his hand. Between Gai’s spandex horror in his pouch and Sai’s mysterious “calibrated” art in his hand, Neji felt like he was walking home with a collection of insanity.

“Fine,” Neji said. “I will accept it. Thank you, Sai.”

“You are welcome, Neji. I hope this restores our statistics for positive interaction.”

Sai offered one last nod. “Good evening.”

    Then, he vanished.

Neji stood alone at the gate of the T&I building. He patted the pouch on his hip, then touched the scroll in his hand.

“My friends are strange,” he muttered to the empty street.
