Bleeding out in front of her

Mirabelle begins to cry again, burying her face in her hands.
Siffrin doesn’t say anything for a moment, drawing back their hand as if they’ve been burned.
“No,” they whisper, “Not you too.”

“We need a better way,” you say one time (which time? how many times has it been? you’ve long since lost track), spread out on the grass, staring up at the endless sky. Estelle uncurls and fixes you with a Look, twice as powerful as yours, two star-bright eyes burning into you, suspicious of where this is going. You never could beat yourself in a staring contest, even before the accident.
You look away instead, grip your dagger, hold it up to the sunlight. Your reflection stares back at you. Tired. Always tired. It’s getting harder and harder to pretend that you’re not.
