Summary
To graduate the Academy, prospective shinobi must pass the Genin Exams.
For most, like Uchiha Sasuke, the son of the most important shinobi in the village, it’ll be easy. For him, it’s not a question of passing, but how many colors he can fly with.
For others, like orphan Naruto, its either pass or get some job moving boxes around for a general store.
For Civilian-born Haruno Sakura, it’s life or death in the most literal sense of the phrase.
When the three’s paths converge before a fisherman that might be a nukenin and a river full of corpses, unlikely alliances are struck, uprisings set fire to the streets, and when even family fails, the only thing left might be the power of friendship.

How long ago had the exam started? A minute? Two?
She was going to die.
It struck her harder this time, somehow. The thought had been occurring to her all morning. For her entire life since that first day she entered the Academy, but it had always been a nagging feeling. A small weight, like a particularly heavy scarf.
The scarf had cinched into a noose. She still couldn’t breathe. She was going to die.

Summary
Kakashi looks at him expectantly and it’s only then that Iruka realizes he actually has to do something since Kakashi agreed to let him try this. He goes slowly, hoping that his deliberate movements come across as confidence and not what they actually are.
It's probably best for Kakashi to stay where he is on the couch, so Iruka goes around the back of it to stand behind him. Iruka starts to move his hands where he needs to. Hesitates. Tries again. Gets a little closer. Still can't.
“Can I … I need to, uhm — is it alright if I touch you?”
or, what started as iruka offering to try relieving the stress of the sharingan for kakashi leads to the two of them spending unprecedented amounts of time together. and now ...
well, iruka isn't quite sure what they are now.

Summary

Summary
Naruto launches out of Kakashi’s lap and right over the desk, uncaring about the papers that crinkle under his bare feet, and then he’s taking quick steps towards Iruka, who catches him as if it's second nature. What isn’t natural is the fact that the boy seems to have lost three feet and fifteen years in the last twenty-four hours since the chunin had last seen him. But there he is, short legs kicking out happily as he perches on Iruka’s hip, giving the room an eye-crinkling smile that makes his cheeks look all the rounder.
“Naruto? What—” He puts everything on the back burner of his mind and focuses on the now, namely turning to the others and asking in his teacher voice, “What happened? Why is he…like this?”
“I’m not like anything!” Naruto says, arguing on principle alone.
When a strange jutsu turns Naruto five years old, Iruka is called for his most important mission yet: motherhood.
