When you touch your palms together, if your partner is indeed your soulmate, the first time they touch, you will feel a tingling sensation as their colour is transferred to your mark. The phenomenon of being attracted to and having relationships with people who have similar marks as yours is common, so this was a way of making sure your partner was your soulmate and go to the next step of your relationship.
Or in Dan Heng and Caelus' case, it was done mostly because they wanted to enter the relationship in the first place. They already know about the soulmate part.
