The smile slips off Eddie’s face. His fingers fall out of Buck’s hair, move to his shoulder blade. “Yeah?” he asks, his tone noncommittal.
“Too good to be true,” Buck says, more honest than he thinks he’s going to be.
Eddie blinks again, nods. “Nothing scarier than a miracle,” he agrees.

The carving on the jadeite was minimal but exquisite, from the hint of thick veins running up the shaft to the gentle curve of the proud head; its ridges and valleys a facsimile of life. Had Maomao guessed, when she procured it from the Verdigris house, that he would keep such a thing for himself? Would she think it base of him to resort to these means? It would only denigrate him further in her mind. Jinshi hoped she at least had a suspicion.

"Would you like me to lock the door, Master Jinshi?" That title, rather than the more formal your highness, is one of her few concessions to the strange dance of politics and position they've been engaged in since they met—she an alpha, he a prince. It's a bigger question wrapped up in the neat packaging of simple words. What Maomao is really asking is if he wants her to be Maomao the dutiful court servant right now, or if he needs her to be Maomao the Alpha.
She's refused to claim him, even though he's asked, but she never actually refuses him comfort.
"Please," he says politely. He could order her to do it, he knows; with that door unlocked, they're still technically in public, and if Jinshi is an omega, he's also a prince.
But he doesn't really want to be her prince, right now. He doesn't want to give Maomao orders. He never has.
Or, Jinshi finally gets what he wants.

Maomao's examination of the tea is fairly thorough, though it doesn't need to be. She knows what it is as soon as she peers into its depths. Still, she examines its colour and its smell and dips one finger into the cup to feel the texture on her skin.
Regretfully, she doesn't taste it. She has a feeling she's going to need to keep her head for this.
"I can help you dispel it physically, if you wish," she tells Jinshi, matter of fact, as she sets the cup back down on the table.
Or, Jinshi is dosed with an aphrodisiac. Maomao takes care of it.
