“Don’t forget,” he said, picking up his own coffee. “Tonight. Rose is counting on us.”
Ilya raised an eyebrow.
“Party.”
“Party,” Shane confirmed. “And behave.”
“I always behave.”
Shane let out a short laugh. “That is so not true.”
Ilya stretched his legs under the counter until his foot bumped Shane's. "What kind of party?"
“She mentioned something about Daft Punk and a really expensive DJ. I stopped paying attention halfway through.”
That, Ilya believed. Shane knew nothing about music. Absolutely nothing.
“You bought tickets?”
Shane rolled his eyes.
“We don’t buy tickets. Rose put our names on some VIP list.”
“Of course she did.”
Shane took a sip of coffee.
“She’s staying here tonight, by the way.”
Ilya lifted an eyebrow.
“Her flight’s not until tomorrow night,” Shane added. “It’ll be easier this way.”
“Right,” Ilya said slowly. “Your ex-girlfriend is sleeping in our house. I’ll make sure to lock the bedroom door and hide the key.”
Shane closed his eyes for a second, like he was praying for patience...

Summary
In the beginning, suggesting Ilya move to Ottawa seemed to be a bridge over a previously unpassable body of water. It felt like a lifeline, a breath of air after drowning for years upon years. Maybe it was, at first. Shane got to have it all, everything he wanted. But despite his willingness to go along with whatever Shane wants, he can tell it’s been weighing on Ilya. He’d given up everything, and Shane can feel how lonely he is. He can see his bright eyes dimming, his laugh growing hollow; he’s withering away while Shane is emptying everything he has into a sport that can never love him back the way Ilya does.

Two years after Ilya moves to Ottawa, Shane decides he's worth more than anything Montreal can give him. He won't let Ilya be the only one who makes sacrifices for their relationship. But he doesn't know that Ilya has been struggling, secretly and in silence. And now the only question is if Shane is too late.

“Were you thinking of also bringing clothes?” Shane asked, glancing into Ilya’s suitcase.
“Do you think we will need them?”
“I’m just saying you might want the option of going outside,” Shane said, dropping a kiss on Ilya’s shoulder and wandering into the closet.
Ilya was obviously going to pack clothing, he just had priorities. Like making sure their whole sex toy collection would fit into his suitcase, not to mention two of the biggest bottles of lube he’d been able to find.
“Take the batteries out of anything that vibrates,” Shane called. Ilya rolled his eyes. What was he, an amateur? “Do you think I should bring two pairs of walking shoes or is one enough?”
“How many walking tours are we going on?”
“I don’t know.”
“How do you not know? What have you been doing for the past month?”
“Research! But I didn’t book anything yet in case we decide we want to just sit by the pool for ten days instead.”
