Then he felt his fingers move, hand forming a tight fist. Claws dug into his palms, and Avid wanted to make a sharp cry of pain, but found that he was not, in fact, the one in control of his body. The shadow in his head seemed to laugh at him, a feeling of condescension emanating from it. His hand uncurled and it began digging them out of the grave.

Avid was staked at the bottom of that pit. Except he doesn't actually die. Something inside him keeps him alive, though he's quick to learn that whatever it is has plans of it's own for him.
