The words took Gideon off-guard. "Hm? Aren't we friends?" He tilted his head. "I ain't askin' for you to go bein' all co-dependent or somethin'. Is that what you're gettin' at?" The question had no malice, just genuine curiosity.

If you’d asked Pacifica maybe a year ago, she would refuse to even look at Gideon Gleeful, much less talk to him. The kid was a magnet for trouble, weaving everyone around his sinister finger. His little act was almost as unnatural as the whiteness in his hair.
She supposed it was only different now that they were united by the same awful circumstances. After all, it was rather difficult to maintain a grudge with someone you were constantly forced to march alongside. He’d also been different since Weirdmageddon - less creepy. Wise in a way that spoke beyond his years - even if he was still annoying.

Summary
Dipper and Ford have issues. A hard time speaking to each other despite Dipper's well-known excitement over Ford's arrival. Ford can't help but be curious as to why but the other won't speak to him.
So, Ford offers a simple game of chess. Which, of course, is a sneaky attempt at a hard conversation.
