Suffocating in dirt would be such a stupid way to die, so Zoro doesn’t allow it to happen. His hand finally, miraculously breaks the surface. He emerges from his grave sputtering and coughing, collapsing on his back to catch his breath as he stares up at the stars. He had been buried.
