    As Sand dan Glokta feels he can no longer ignore the growingly resentful tone of the letters he receives from his mother, after a long time-no see he finally takes a trip to his family home, to let Mother meet his wife and daughter on her firm request. The visit was meant to be nothing else than a long-postponed family meeting, but Ardee knows how to make the best of it, waiting only for the moment when she and her husband are left alone in the luxury chambers. Resultantly, what happens in one of the mansion’s bedrooms makes Glokta regret he had put the visit off for so long.

    ‘How is your own wife?’ he tossed over his shoulder, hoping to change the subject, then realising he had strayed onto one even more difficult.
    But Glokta only showed his empty smile again. ‘She is a tremendous comfort to me, your Majesty. I really don't know how I ever managed without her.’
