Summary
There were memories that he grasped at, like the silver minnows in the river that slipped between his fingers. The fish didn't all belong to his river, drifting in from other streams and creeks and rivers, all of them converging into one path. Sometimes a fish leapt out of the water and into his outstretched arms, but none of those were his. The fish from his river knew their home and stayed close to the bottom, far enough down that he would have to wade into the river and risk being swept away to have a chance at catching them. They wouldn't break the surface like these fish that weren't his, these minnows he did not recognize.

“You always do this. You disappear, you talk to everyone else, and then you come crawling back here acting like nothing happened. You were laughing with her.” She was crying now, tears flowing down her face, and he couldn’t tell for the life of him if they were fake.
“She said something funny!”
“You don’t laugh with me like that anymore.”
He wanted to curl into himself, to disappear into the shadows of his room where no one could reach him.
“I… I’m not…” His voice faltered and he hated the quiver that he couldn’t hide.
