Summary
When Joe meets Nicky, it's love at first sight--at least until it becomes abundantly clear that Nicky hates him, for no reason at all. For lack of any better ideas, Joe decides to be the bigger man, suck it up, and just be polite when their social circle forces them to interact.
Of course, that would be easier if Nicky's daemon wasn't literally the sweetest, warmest, kindest, most wonderful daemon in the world.
How, exactly, does an asshole like Nicky wind up with a daemon like that?

Summary
Together, they strip the corpses of fallen soldiers like scavengers, sending prayers of forgiveness to their respective Gods, and take what they can carry on two horses. Eilat is several weeks of hard riding away, and from there Yusuf is insistent they take a merchant ship to Aden. Nicolo soon loses all feeling in his behind and thighs. Yusuf continues to alight from his horse as if having awoken from a pleasant nap. “It’s all about rhythm,” he tells Nicolo, moving his hips to demonstrate. Nicolo contemplates killing him, for whatever good that will do.

“No,” Booker says. He shakes his head. He’s looking between Joe and Nicky, at the space deliberately put between them, at the space he put there. “No, I can’t. I’m sorry. I’m sorry.”
“Mi amore,” Nicky tries, reaching out again to Joe. Andy can see the streaks of blood on his arms, his cheek, caking the back of his head. He’d been shot, Joe said. You shot Nicky. You shouldn’t have done that.

And yet, there Nicky sat, his back to him, his shoulders relaxed. Anticipation thrummed through the perfectly quiet room. Joe glanced at the monitor where Nicky’s eyes blazed back at him, a soft smile on his lips. Joe swallowed thickly.

Finally, nearing the bottom of the notifications, Joe spots a new commenter. He gets a handful of new followers most days, but they usually either lurk or have been commenting for ages already. This guy isn’t a new follower, and Joe hasn’t seen him comment before. A quick glance at his profile shows that he is following Joe, and has been for a while - he likes almost everything Joe posts. He’s never said anything before, though.
This guy, @dj_nova, has commented, Excuse me, is that a quote from Inferno? below Joe’s deadlift video.

Joe looks over. For half a second there is a question in the twist of his forehead but then he gets it. His whole body changes. Arms relax on the table, posture slackens, confidence oozes from him so thick Nicky can practically taste it. He brings the cigarette held between his elegant fingers to his lips, drawing Nicky’s gaze to them.
“Feel free,” he says, flitting his eyes down for a second to the glowing end of the cigarette.

He says it as though the idea of him ever going to Malta is as far-fetched and ridiculous as other kids’ plans to grow up and become dinosaurs or superheroes, and the thought makes Joe feel unaccountably sad.
“Maybe when you get the ransom money,” Joe says. His brow wrinkles, like he’s not sure if Joe means the comment as a sincere ‘maybe one day’ or a sarcastic call-back to what he said yesterday about how no one but the bosses was going to see any of that money, and Joe’s honestly not sure himself, caught uncomfortably between the instinct to like this man and the more logical inclination to remain wary if not outright hostile towards all of his captors.

A not-quite-modern AU in which Nicky isn't a crusader but is mixed up with a different set of people who do very bad things for not very good reasons, and Joe isn't defending Jerusalem but does end up in a different sort of trouble far from home, and a lot is different but some things never change.Bookmarked by Squeeful

Nicky signs up for a website that will match him to his perfect spouse. Since leaving the church he's been terribly lonely, and uses the website as a last resort. The algorithm matches him with the man of his dreams, but when he arrives on Joe's doorstep it becomes apparent that Joe doesn't want him. Nicky understands, however. Why would a man so perfect as Joe want someone like him?

Andy did this on purpose, she’s sure of it.
No matter how many excuses about skillsets and plans and 'you’ve been working on your Arabic, it’ll be good practice, Nile'… she knows now it was all a bunch of lies. There can be no other explanation for why she has been here, stuck with Joe in the middle of a hot, Italian summer while Andy has taken Nicky to the northern most part of France.
It is a unique and unexpected kind of hell.(A series of seven stories, snapshots of the first few years of Nile's time with the team. I'm trash for Nile & Nicky & Joe dynamics so there's a lot of that in here, but the others are all part of the craziness as well.)
